DIY WOOD DOORS - BUILD PLANS

Finally, the highly requested build plans for the beautiful herringbone doors that @buildwithboi
created for our dining room. I dreamt of having wooden french doors in place of my worn out closet and pantry doors for some time now. With my fiancé's improving woodworking skills, I knew I could design something that he could build. They turned out even better than I envisioned and I'm so thankful for his willingness to execute all of my ideas!
We added glass inserts to one set of doors in order to display the items inside of the pretty pantry.
The perfect stain color, hardware & herringbone detail.
HOW TO: BUILD HERRINGBONE WOOD DOORS
TOOLS YOU WILL NEED:
- MITER SAW
- TABLE SAW
- ROUTER
- 3/8 RABBETING BIT
- ROUTER TABLE
- CHAMFER BIT
- KREG POCKET HOLE JIG
- POCKET SCREWS
- DRILL
- CHISEL
- HAMMER
- CLEAR SILICONE
- PUSH POINTS
SHOPPING LIST FOR EACH DOOR:
We used poplar. Double up for 2 doors. Adjust materials depending on your needs.*
- (3) 1x4x8 WOOD BOARDS - stiles/rails (long side pieces & horizontal pieces)
- (15-20) 1/2"x3"x3' WOOD BOARDS - herringbone pieces - you may need more/less depending on how well you cut angles & whether you want to incorporate glass or not
- 12"x36" GLASS SHEET - found exact size at home depot
- 1/4" PLYWOOD - size depends on whether you want glass or an all wood door
CUT LIST FOR EACH DOOR:
*Note: depending on
your door opening size, you may need to adjust these measurements to fit your home.*
- (2) 80 1/4" x 3" BOARD
- (3) 11 1/4" x 3 1/2" BOARD
- (1) 1/4" PLYWOOD CUT TO 12" x 34 5/16"
- (10) 3" x 3' BOARDS
STRIP DOWN PIECES ACCORDINGLY
ATTACH WOOD USING POCKET HOLES
ROUTE INSIDE EDGES W/ RABBETING BIT & A DEPTH OF 1/4"
YOU'LL END UP WITH ROUNDED CORNERS
SQUARE OFF THE CORNERS WITH A CHISEL
CUT & INSERT PLYWOOD ON THE BACKSIDE. ADHERE USING WOOD GLUE
MEASURE & CUT HERRINGBONE PIECES @ 45° ANGLES
ROUTE THE LONG SIDES W/ CHAMFER BIT FOR DEPTH

ADHERE HERRINGBONE PIECES W/ WOOD GLUE TO THE FRONT PLYWOOD
MINWAX STAIN COMBINATION
Sand doors and apply wood conditioner. Wipe stain on & immediately wipe off. Apply stain one after the other with a dry time of 5-10 minutes in between coats. Wait at least 24 hours to dry before sealing with polycrylic.
- 1 COAT SIMPLY WHITE
- 2 COATS GOLDEN OAK
- 1 COAT WEATHERED OAK
GLASS INSTALLATION
Apply silicone around the edges & insert glass. Position push points a few inches apart, lying flat against the glass. Using a putty knife, gently tap each point firmly into the wood.
SHOP HARDWARE
Add your hinges, hardware & admire all of your hard work!
These doors honestly couldn't be more perfect. It took some trial and error (with the stain color) but it was worth all of the stress! Be sure to sand & stain all doors the same so that the stain color will be consistent. If you were inspired by this and recreate this project, please send me photos! I'd love to see your creations!
